If someone in your family was one of the 600,000 Americans who died of COVID-19, you may be able to file for $9,000 in reimbursement for funeral related expenses. Just this week, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) changed its policy to make it easier for families to collect the death benefit. No longer are survivors and families required to submit a death certificate specifying COVID-19 as a cause of death to qualify for reimbursement.
This change is especially important for families whose loved ones passed early in the pandemic when few death certificates cited a COVID-19 cause.
